Unbelief will make us fall short of the rest God has for us. The old Puritan commentator John Owen described five features of this rest for the believer:. Let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it : This place of rest is so glorious it should concern us when others or we seem to come short of it.

Ancient Israel heard the word but it did not profit them because they did not receive it with faith. Hearing gave them the opportunity, but the opportunity only profited if it was mixed with faith. Mixed with faith : You can hear the word and have spiritual experiences, but unless the work of God is mixed with faithit will do no good. This explains why two people can hear the same message and one benefits while the other does not. It also shows that when there is more faith — more of the anticipation of blessing and favor from God — there is more blessing indeed.

Think of the joy Israel had in coming out of Egypt and approaching the Promised Land — and then think of all the graves dug in the desert.

A wonderful promise was available but unattained. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. So swore in My wrath : This quote from Psalm demonstrates that God has a rest available to us. Therefore it remains that some must enter it : God did not create this place of rest in vain. If Israel those to whom it was first preached failed to enter because of disobediencethen someone else would enter into that rest. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God : All this together proves the point that there is a rest for the people of God.

What can we do to make sure we enter that rest? So it it works oriented? We have learned that the good news was preached to the Israelites in the wilderness and they hardened their hearts and provoked God. We have seen that this same good news was preached to us. In fact, His promises to us are even greater than His promises to them. So, what we should do? Verse 11 has the answer.

We should be diligent to enter into the rest and not fall short. As we learned last week, we must regularly evaluate our spiritual position. We must not allow ourselves to drift away or fall away from God. We must learn from the example of those who rebelled in the wilderness and not make the same mistakes that they did. If someone asked you to tell them why you believe the Bible and why Christians follow such an old bookwhat would you tell them?

What is the relationship between verse 12 and 13? How about 13 and the rest of the passage? This verse is often quoted. It is one of the most famous verses about the Word of God. Normally, however, it is removed from the context and some of the power is lost.

Because it is powerful. Because it can change our lives. Because it is greater than any other weapon. When we hear it, we must act. We must obey it. The Bible comes from the very heart and mouth of the Holy Spirit, from the very throne room of God. It is infinite in wisdom, infinite in power.Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.

I am saved, and I know and feel the peace which results there from. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. He who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works : Entering this rest means no longer needing to work. The idea is that there is no longer any place for works as a basis for our own righteousness. We cease from self-justifying works because Jesus finished the work on the cross.

Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. Let us therefore : This phrase, or this idea, appears repeatedly in the Book of Hebrews.

Hebrews Chapter 4 Part 1

A doctrinal truth is presented — in this case, the truth of a remaining rest available by faith — then the truth is applied. Be diligent to enter that rest : The rest is there, but God does not force it upon us. We must enter that rest.

Clearly, the rest is entered by faith ; but it takes diligent faith. This shows us that faith is not passive ; it takes diligence to trust in, rely on, and cling to Jesus and His work for us.

Lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience : If we are not diligent to enter that restthe result can be a disaster. We may fall according to the same example of disobedience.

We may falleven as the children of Israel did in the wilderness. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise of being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it.

Hebrews Why should people fear, especially Christians? Simply because great and eternal rewards are subject to forfeit as long as people are in the flesh, because a powerful and aggressive foe in the person of Satan and his hosts are opposed to us, and because the multitude of distractions, temptations, and necessary labors of life constantly tend to produce that one moment of life in which inattention can lead to everlasting ruin. This fear is reinforced by the thought that many others failed, even after a glorious beginning.

The first thirteen verses of this chapter conclude the second exhortation, or warning, and the idea of "a rest" for the people of God, already mentioned in Hebrewsis taken up and further elaborated. The Christian rest includes rest in Christ, as procured by taking his yoke and learning of him Matthew ,29rest from the labors of life Revelationand rest with the Lord in heaven throughout all eternity; and although the author of Hebrews might have preached the Christian rest from the standpoint of Christ's teachings and those of the apostles, he elected to base his appeal upon the Old Testament, equally valid, and better designed to woo his readers back from a reversion to Judaism; hence the statement that "there was a promise LEFT ," in the sense of being "left open.

Five hundred years, almost, after Israel entered Canaan, David in Psalms spoke of there being a rest for God's people, indicating that their final entry into Canaan was not the full attainment of that rest, and that something much more than that was involved. Again, the word "haply" injects the idea of inadvertence.

Alas, it must be supposed that the far greater part of Christians falling away from faith in Christ do so unintentionally. Few indeed ever decide boldly against the Lord, and move decisively against him; but, on the contrary, they allow inattention to spiritual things, carelessness in attending worship, neglect of daily prayer and study of the Word, and encroachments upon their time due to worldly and pleasure-loving friends to divert their attention first, and later their whole life and conduct from the path of honor and duty.

It is hard to imagine a more urgent and persistent warning than the one given here. For indeed we have had good tidings preached unto us, even as also they; but the word of hearing did not profit them, because it was not united by faith with them that heard. This does not mean that the Jews had the same gospel preached unto them that Christians have received, but that JUST AS they received a good word about the promised rest, so have Christians.

There is also here a plain indication of the source of that faith deemed so necessary to salvation, in that it is called a "word of hearing.

It is God's word itself, then, that has the power to enter the heart and produce faith. The rendition of the last clause here has been the subject of many disputes and disagreements among scholars, but fortunately the meaning is obvious. As Bruce said it, "The sense is plain enough; the good news had to be assimilated or appropriated by faith if it was to bring any benefit to the hearers. Eerdmans Publishing Company,p.

For we who have believed do enter into that rest; even as he hath said, As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest; although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. The use of the present tense, "we do enter into that rest," stresses the first and immediate phase of the Christian's rest and focuses the attention of the believer upon the benefits and joys of that Christian service which are already his and in the process of being enjoyed by him.

This verse again strikes at the tragic failure of Israel who, though entering Canaan, did not in fact enter into God's rest, in the higher and better sense of becoming a holy nation of righteous and devoted worshipers of God, as God had commanded them Exodus ; but on the other hand, they rebelled against God time and again; they rejected the theocracy, demanded a king like the nations around them, worshipped idols, oppressed the poor, and even made their children pass through the fire to Molech!

Thus, while entering a type of God's rest, they failed to attain any reality of it; and furthermore, all this came about in spite of the fact that God was fully prepared to welcome them into such a glorious rest, indeed, had been anticipating it "from the foundation of the world. What is meant by "the foundation of the world"? The words are used in Hebrews ; Matthew ; ; Luke ; John ; Ephesians ; 1 Peter ; Revelation ; and the message these references carry is that God's plans and purposes for people predate the formation of the world itself.

And this coincides with Paul's word that "We speak God's wisdom in a mystery, even the wisdom that hath been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds unto our glory" 1 Corinthians All efforts to construe "the foundation of the world" as a reference to its reconstruction following the disaster in Eden must be viewed as incorrect, since, by definition, God's "eternal purpose" Ephesians has existed always, and the world has not.

The promise of rest applies to us who are Christians, seeing that those to whom the promise was made failed to attain it. And their failure was not due to the fact that the rest had not been prepared, because it existed since the day that God finished his work of creation.Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it.

Modern-day believers usually think that the good news —the gospel— was first preached in New Testament times by Jesusor John the Baptist, or the Apostles. However, God selected Abraham to father a race of people that would be His priests. They would be living examples of the gospel —ambassadors— to the entire world those many years ago.

The good news that they proclaimed by their ministry was that the only way to be acceptable to God was by trusting —having faith in— Him and His works. The passage above cautions the generations that followed to not make the same horrific choice that their forefathers did. God completed the creation by the seventh day —and it was perfect.

And that was before the fall happened! For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.

Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience. The psalm told them to recognize, praise and give thanks to their Shepherd, their great God and King, the Owner and Creator of all. Everywhere the people went, the ark was prominently carried before them.

It was made of wood and covered in gold, it had angels sitting on top, it was the seat on which blood was spilled annually for the payment of sin. Each is a monumental reminder. The Hebrews set up the tabernacle, with all its furnishings, in the center of every place they camped.
